Question by Desiree: Is religion responsible for people having a disgust reaction to sexual images?
I think a disgust reaction is like an instinctual defense mechanism that operates without volition; creatures with it react with revulsion to whatever they’re seeing, tasting, visualizing etc. Humans have evolved with this disgust reaction and it helps us avoid things that might be harmful. But why do sexual images make us react with disgust? I mean, they’re not harmful to us. Does it have something to do with religions that have been telling us for centuries that sex is disgusting and sinful?

If you are not fighting against sin you are giving in to it. You are a slave to it. It is not just one type of sin that is revolting but sin itself in all its ugly forms should be intolerable to people of God. Sex is not a sin between a married couple.
Uh, I don’t know what your religion teaches you but mine says that sex is an important part of marriage. At the end of the marriage ceremony, the priest says, “Go and rejoice with your spouse.” I don’t think he’s talking about doing the Zorba dance.
I find nothing disgusting about such things,you are born because of a sexual act,squeezed out of a vagina fed by boobs so you can be strong and healthy,only perverts can think that images of such are disgusting!

Obviously you have little or no knowledge of Rome’s history. Sex was constantly incorporated into religion. It was in their art work, even the art work in the churches.
There are plenty of sexual images that would disgust anyone, religious or not.

So you would be ok if your husband was looking at images of your neighbors wife doing sexual things? I mean its no point of him being disgusted and turning away if its not harmful?

There is nothing evil, shameful or disgusting about the human body, nudity or sex. It is only the programming we have as children that make us react that way.
I think there is nothing wrong with a nude body. We are all born that way. Flesh is simply what houses our bodies. The only reasons humans wear clothing is because we are no longer adapted to deal with the sun, wind, rain and cold. Otherwise, we wouldn’t need clothing.
Interesting. I was watching March of the Penguins (I do not recommend it) and I noticed that there was quite a bit of graphic penguin violence, but when the penguins were mating, it kind of quickly skipped over that bit.
What I´m trying to say is that you have a point, – violence seems acceptable to quite some degree, but sex – eek! We feel more disgusted as a society with sex than with violence.

Why would you feel that sexual images are disgusting? Sex is nothing more than a normal biological process. Would an image of someone eating disgust you? I am not familiar with any religion that teaches that sex is disgusting. Most are the opposite. The problem is not in religion, but rather in your own feeling.

The poor lady barely made it back to the house and she collapsed! The Priest didn’t help her! She was an expendable piece of meat for him! Preachers today need to keep their lovers in hiding, but in Bible times the Priests they had nothing to hide!

In any Bible story a Priest of God can have his slaughtered lover cut up in pieces in the most bizarre way, lie openly about it and get away with murder! FONDLING was a practically unknown in Bible times. This Holy Lie cost the near extinction of the Benjamin clan! According to the Priestly Bible writers nobody in ISRAEL questioned this Priest’s gory crime at all, but they all went to war to kill all the Israelites of the Benjamin tribe. The lesson here is that you never question the word of the Clergy no matter how pervert they might be!
This story follows the same bizarre pattern throughout the Bible! – Christians hardly read the Bible to find out! The preachers today totally ignore stories like this one! They are trained ONLY to preach “Christ and him crucified!” Christians ignore any bizarre behavior in the life of God’s Chosen people. All Israel went to war against the tribe of Benjamin. Like in any Holy War almost everybody is killed including children and pregnant women, except for some 400 young virgin girls that were spared for the EXCLUSIVE SEXUAL PLEASURE of God’s fighting men!
Taboos are often associated with what comes in or goes out of the body as you suggest. Sexual images do not always elicit disgust, otherwise they would not be used in advertising. All rational forms of thinking will talk about restraint with regards to pleasures such as sex and eating, given that taking these to extremes can cause a lot of illness including death at childbirth (historically). I don’t think it is religion. It is an aspect of being Human and the search for transcendence, to be above animals. Many animals do show a great deal of restraint with regards to sex. Religion may have exacerbated certain aspects of taboo behaviour into ritual or dogma. By the way, some religious people say that meditation is better than sex, so sometimes you have to ignore lesser pleasures to experience greater ones, or at least, pleasures that last longer than a few minutes.
