Sexual images do not always elicit disgust, otherwise they would not be used in advertising. All rational forms of thinking will talk about restraint with regards to pleasures such as sex and eating, given that taking these to extremes can cause a lot of illness including death at childbirth (historically). I don't think it is religion. It is an aspect of being Human and the search for transcendence, to be above animals. Many animals do show a great deal of restraint with regards to sex. Religion may have exacerbated certain aspects of taboo behaviour into ritual or dogma. By the way, some religious people say that meditation is better than sex, so sometimes you have to ignore lesser pleasures to experience greater ones, or at least, pleasures that last longer than a few minutes.
